
Meet the Dentists

Dr. Stephen H. Mason
Dr. Mason has been in private practice in Bloomfield since 1971. He received his D.M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1968. He served in the U.S. Army Dental Corps. In Fort Carson, Colorado from 1968-1970. Dr. Mason has specialized training in Nobelbiocare (Breanemark), 3I (implant Innovations) and ITI (Straumann) implant systems. In the past 20 years, he has restored his patients to excellent dental health with as little as an implant to some patients who are missing all of their teeth and need multiple implants.
“In our office, having implants done is very easy with minimal discomfort. Dr. Meltzer, our periodontist, does the surgical placement of the implant, and I place the final restoration. Today, we have the ability to replace a missing tooth on the same day the implant is placed. We also have our own in-house dental laboratory with two excellent technicians to facilitate all procedures involving implants, crowns, bridges and dentures.”
Dr. Mason does a lot of cosmetic dentistry. He loves to improve his patient’s appearance and confidence with Invisalign (invisible braces), bleaching, bonding, veneers (including the new minimally invasive veneers), crowns, bridges and other techniques. Creating a beautiful smile is very rewarding for him.
Dr. Mason has been treating patients with TMJ, TMD, bruxisim (clenching and grinding) and headaches for 30 years. He recently started using the NTI appliance, which is a tension suppression system and is currently the only FDA approved appliance for the treatment of migraine headaches. Dr. Mason also makes dental appliances for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Some of the other procedures performed by Dr. Mason are root canals, extractions, bonded (tooth colored) fillings, sports guards and dentures.

Dr. Mason is an active member of the American Dental Association, the Connecticut State Dental Association and the Hartford Dental Society. He is a former president of the Connecticut Chapter of the American Society of Preventive Dentistry. Dr. Mason is a clinical instructor in the Department of Oral Health and Diagnostic Sciences, Division of Behavioral Sciences and Community Health at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. He also participates in the mentoring program at the Dental School where dental students spend time in his office observing and assisting.
Dr. Mason is active in community service, and is past President of the Rotary Club of Bloomfield. He enjoys golf and boating with his wife Barbara. He has three children and five grandchildren. Jessica is married, lives in Boston and has two sons and a daughter. David is married, lives in Israel and has one son. Jonathan joined Family Dental Practice as a dentist in 2007. Dr. Mason is celebrating the birth of his fifth grandchild.

Dr. Jeffrey R. Morris
Dr. Morris has been in private practice since 1973. He received his D.M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1971 and did an internship at Monmouth Medical Center in 1972. He worked in the Columbia University Periodontal Program in 1985. Dr. Morris has advanced his training in Implant Dentistry, Cosmetic dentistry such as placement of porcelain veneers, crowns, and tooth colored fillings gives Dr. Morris particular satisfaction. “Even a simple whitening procedure can make a substantial improvement in a person’s smile, reflecting an improved sense of confidence and self-assurance.”
Having implants done by our specialist Dr. Meltzer right here in our office is extremely convenient and comfortable. Dr. Morris then places the final implant crown or bridge with help from our on-site dental laboratory that uses only the highest quality materials and techniques. His experience in Dental Implants is extensive and he is constantly attending continuing education courses in this area. Dr. Morris’s memberships included the American Dental Association, the Connecticut State Dental Association, and the Hartford Dental Society.
Dr. Morris has been an active sponsor of the Special Olympic Games. He enjoys golf, visiting his children, and three grandchildren in Texas. His son Josh is married with a daughter and they reside in New York City . Dr. Morris’s youngest daughter is a “Special Olympian” and lives and works in Hartford.

Dr. Jonathan E. Mason
Dr. Mason, “Dr. Jon,” is the most recent dentist to join Family Dental Practice Team. He received his B. A. from Hamilton College in 2002, his D.M.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine in 2006, and has completed a one-year general practice residency at the VA Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
As a new dentist Dr. Mason has been trained in the most recent technological advances in dentistry including, but not limited to, Invisalign (invisible braces), digital radiography and documentation, rotary root canal instrumentation, porcelain veneers, tooth colored fillings, and implant restorations for single crowns and complete dentures.
Dr. Mason has advanced treatment in oral surgery including wisdom teeth extraction and is responsible for the more complex extractions performed in the practice.

Dr. Mason is an active member of the American Dental Association, the Connecticut State Dental Association and the Hartford Dental Society, as well as the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Dr. Mason is a clinical instructor in the Department of Oral Health and Diagnostic Sciences, Division of Behavioral Sciences and Community Health at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine.
He is an avid golfer and also plays squash and tennis. Dr. Mason and his wife Allison are enjoying their newborn son. Dog Blu and cat Boo Bear are adjusting to the new member in the family!

Dr. Steven L. Meltzer
Dr. Meltzer attended the University of Connecticut in Storrs from 1970-74. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and was accepted for membership in the Phi Beta Kappa honor fraternity. He received his D.M.D. degree from the University of Connecticut, School of Dental Medicine; located in Farmington in 1978. Dr. Meltzer attended a residency in Periodontics from 1978-80 at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine where he received his certification in Periodontology. He served as Chief Resident from 1979-80.
In private practice since 1980, Dr. Meltzer continues to attend dental education courses given by the American Academy of Periodontolgy in all phases of periodontal and implant treatment. Dr. Meltzer has attended courses and is certified in the Straumann ITI, Nobel Biocare, and 31 implant systems. He has also, attended courses in advanced bone regenerations techniques.
“Our goal at Family Dental Practice is to provide State of the Art, periodontal and implant care.” With the techniques and procedures available today we can repair the damage of the past, restore health, function, and esthetics. Your comfort is our concern, from local anesthetic (Novocaine) to unconscious sedation (being asleep,) fear of dental procedures is a thing of the past. Even the most complex procedures can be completed with comfort.
Dr. Meltzer is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Dental Association, the Connecticut State Dental Association, the Hartford Dental Society, and the Connecticut Society of Periodontists.
Dr. Meltzer lives in Avon with his wife Susan. He has three children. His daughter Sari lives and works in Atlanta. His son Patrick and daughter Kristina work in business related fields.
For the past twenty five years Dr. Meltzer has been an active member of the, First Company Governor’s Horse Guards, State of Connecticut. He presently serves as Major, Executive Officer. When not relaxing with his wife and Bichon puupy Sophie, he can be found riding horses through the trails of Avon.

Dr. Jeffrey Chu
Dr. Jeffrey Chu received his D.M.D. degree from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine and holds a B.S. in biomedical engineering from Boston University. He also served as chief resident at his post-doctoral training residency at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dr. Chu has been involved in various community programs.
Dr. Chu is committed to providing the best comprehensive care possible and treats each patient with compassion and respect. He frequently takes continuing education courses to keep updated on the most advanced dental procedures. Dr. Chu enjoys all aspects of dentistry and is experienced with the latest dental technology including invisible braces, soft tissue laser, digital radiography, and implant restorations. His favorite part of dentistry is seeing patients of all ages become confident with their smiles.
Dr. Chu is an active member of the American Dental Association, Connecticut State Dental Association, and is working towards fellowship with the Academy of General Dentistry.
Dr. Chu grew up in Massachusetts and enjoys the New England area. In his spare time, he plays tennis, travels, cooks, tries new restaurants, and spends time with his family and fianceé.
